"The Art of Deception"

The E28 model of the BMW M5 is the true understatement car, or as the British people refer to; a "Q car". When it arrived in early 1985 it was the first in it's class, the sports car in disguise. The only real competitor to the M5 at that time was the so-called "AMG Hammer", a Mercedes 300 E with a 32 Valve V8 from Mercedes 560 SEL under the bonnet. The "Hammer" were capable of doing more than 290 km/h thanks to a terrific drag coefficient. You can come to the conclusion after the first look at the  first M5 that it's aerodynamic isn't good at all. With it's characteristic front following the tradition of the BMW of the late ´70 and early eighties of the 3, 6 and 7 series it didn't had good aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of 0,37. But that design came to an end with the introduction of the new 5, 7 and 8 series. But despite the E28 bad aerodynamics it was capable of more than 245 km/h. Without the M aerodynamic kit you could easily think it was a plain 518i with  180 HP less...

"The M5 was built in order to demonstrate what BMW is able to do and to satisfy the individual request of customers"
"The problem is not the engineering of the car, but the capacity to build it"
